Statement of intent

The exam title I have chosen is “ESPRESSO”. Espresso is coffee brewed by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans. Coffee is becoming a very consumable product within society. You can find it everywhere you go from corner side coffee shops, petrol stations, to corporate business coffee chains. Coffee is a huge part of society, either used to socialise or to function on a daily basis. I want to explore how coffee can affect people. I want to show the journey from when they are sleepy and tired to after they've had their morning coffee, showing the result of having drunk the coffee. I have been inspired by the photographers, Jonathan Knowles and Meredith Andrews with their portrait photography and Annabelle Breakey with her still life. My work will involve a lot of studio work, doing minimal work in post-production with Photoshop. I intend to do some portrait photography showing the gradual progress of people when they have just woken up, having their coffee to when they are ready, with their make-up on, prepared to face the day. I will also be doing some still life photography of coffee showing it in all its glamour and glory, showing the luxurious side to coffee.
